Democrat Eric Adams is set to become the 110th mayor of US metropolitan New York City, according to consensus forecasts.

The 61-year-old incumbent Brooklyn borough mayor prevailed over his Republican opponent Curtis Sliwa in Tuesday's vote in the eight-million-strong metropolis, the AP news agency and CNN network reported.
Adams will thus become New York's second black city leader in January, succeeding the rather unpopular Bill de Blasio, who was not allowed to run for mayor again after two terms.
Adams was considered a moderate candidate who wants to lead the highest office with a course between left and centrist forces. Besides economic recovery from the Corona pandemic - which killed more than 30,000 New Yorkers - one of Adams' most difficult tasks may be dealing properly with the police. In the election campaign he had promised a balance between his rather friendly position towards the often criticised task forces and justice especially for blacks in the face of structural racism.
Adams used to be a police officer himself and, unlike some New Yorkers, is against cutting the huge 6 billion dollar budget of the New York City Police Department (NYPD). He sees fighting crime as one of his most important tasks. In addition to security, the future mayor also promised measures against overpriced housing, investments in schools and 480 kilometres of new bike lanes during the election campaign.
New York City is also politically more important than other cities in the USA, as it is considered a yardstick for progressive politics. In the liberal stronghold, Adam's victory over Sliwa was almost a formality.
In addition to the mayor's office, the elections in New York on Tuesday also included the election of the new head of the district attorney's office and new members of the city council. Furthermore, a number of possible constitutional amendments were decided - including one for a right to clean air, clean water and a healthy environment. There were no results there at first.
