The 61-year-old incumbent Brooklyn borough mayor prevailed over his Republican opponent Curtis Sliwa in Tuesday's vote in the eight-million-member metropolis, the AP news agency and CNN network reported.
Adams will thus become the second black city leader of New York from January and successor to the rather unpopular Bill de Blasio, who was not allowed to run again as mayor after two terms.
Adams was seen as a moderate candidate who wants to lead the highest office with a course between left-wing and centrist forces. Besides economic recovery from the Corona pandemic - which killed more than 30,000 New Yorkers - one of Adams' most difficult tasks may be dealing properly with the police. On the campaign trail, he had promised a balance between his more friendly stance toward the often-criticized task forces and justice for blacks in particular in the face of structural racism.
Adams used to be a police officer himself and, unlike some New Yorkers, is opposed to cutting the New York City Police Department's (NYPD) huge $6 billion budget. He sees fighting crime as one of his most important tasks. In addition to security, the incoming mayor also promised during the campaign to take action against overpriced housing, invest in schools and add 480 kilometers of new bike lanes.
New York City is also politically more important than other cities in the U.S., as it is regarded as a yardstick for progressive politics. In the liberal stronghold, Adam's victory over Sliwa was almost considered a formality.
In addition to the mayor's office, Tuesday's elections in New York included the selection of the new head of the district attorney's office and new members of the city council. Decisions were also made on a number of possible constitutional amendments - including one for a right to clean air, water and a healthy environment. There were no initial results there.
