Ukraine: Selenskyj addresses ex-Chancellor Merkel directly

The pictures from Bucha cause horror all over the world. The Russian army has carried out a massacre in the Ukrainian city. In the region around the capital Kyiv, the bodies of a total of 410 residents have now been recovered.
It is hard to imagine how deep the pain and grief must be in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj has now spoken out after the Bucha massacre. In a dramatic video message, Zelenskyj addressed former Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday evening (April 3).
Volodymyr Zelenskyj invites Merkel to Bucha
Merkel should travel to the city of Bucha, which has been shaken by the serious atrocities. The Ukrainian President personally invited the German ex-Chancellor.
In the Kyiv suburb, Angela Merkel could get an idea of her failed Russia policy in recent years. Zelenskyy also addressed former French President Nicolas Sarkozy directly in the video message and linked him to the European Union's pro-Putin policy.
Selenskyj gets specific: what he accuses Angela Merkel of
The Ukrainian President gets specific: In 2008, the NATO states, including Germany, promised Ukraine membership, but then backed down out of consideration for Russia. Merkel was Chancellor from 2005 to 2021, so her term of office fell exactly during this time.
"I invite Ms. Merkel and Mr. Sarkozy to visit Bucha and see what the policy of concessions to Russia has led to in 14 years," said Zelenskyy. "You will see the tortured Ukrainians with your own eyes."
Russia denies committing the Bucha massacre
The pictures from Bucha, where numerous bodies of residents were found on the streets after the withdrawal of Russian troops, caused international horror on Sunday. Ukraine blames the massacre on Russian troops who until recently occupied the small town.
Moscow denies that. Instead, the Russian Ministry of Defense has dismissed the allegations. The army had previously withdrawn from the areas.
But the reaction from the Kremlin is even more shocking. It is a "planned media campaign" by Ukraine. In addition, Russia gave the impression that the Ukrainian army could have killed the civilians themselves through shelling. There was no evidence for this. (with dpa)
