There has been speculation for a long time, but now it is certain: after years under the leadership of NDR, a new broadcaster will take over the helm of the ESC in 2026. This means the end of an era for the competition - but also a breath of fresh air.
The Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) is not only a major musical event, but also a real show firework that unites Europe and captivates millions of fans. But from 2026 there will be a new chapter in ARD's ESC book.
ESC: This change will take place from 2026
After almost 30 years, the ESC will no longer be broadcast on NDR. Instead, SWR will take over the lead and bring a breath of fresh air to the legendary competition. There had been speculation about a change in responsibility for the music contest for some time, but it was only last year that the idea really took shape.
In the entertainment sector, different priorities are to be set in the future. "I am grateful to SWR for being willing to take on this important task and to lead the ESC successfully into the future," said Christine Strobl, ARD program director.
The broadcaster is aware of the big shoes it is following in: "We will do everything we can to ensure that it remains exciting, colorful, lively, worth talking about and surprising," revealed SWR program director Clemens Bratzler. The aim of the change is to help Germany win music again.
What does the broadcaster's takeover mean for the show?
In recent years in particular, German starters have been increasingly unsuccessful, which has caused general frustration among all those involved. Last year, the German starter Isaak achieved a decent result with twelfth place.
What exactly the takeover of the broadcaster means for the future of the show is still unclear. But one thing is certain: SWR will not only broadcast the ESC in the future, but will also prepare the stage for an exciting new era!
