Betty MacDonald, Wolfgang Hampel, Satire is My Favourite Animal, Betty MacDonald Interviews Betty Bard MacDonald (* 26 March 1907 in Boulder (Colorado); † 7 February 1958 in Seattle) was an American author. Among her best-known works were The Egg and I and the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle stories Her first book, The Egg and I, was published in 1945. It sold over 1 million copies within a year and was made into a film in 1947 starring Fred MacMurray and Claudette Colbert. After that, the successful Ma and Pa Kettle films were made. The role of Ma Kettle was played by Marjorie Main, who was nominated for an Oscar in 1947. Other autobiographical novels followed, Anybody Can Do Anything, The Plague and I and Onions in the Stew, as well as the young adult book Nancy and Plum. In 1996, journalist Wolfgang Hampel, author of the humorous bestseller Satire is my favorite animal, interviewed Betty MacDonald's family and friends. The interviews were published on CD/DVD by the Betty MacDonald Fan Club in 2009. Included is the only interview of her youngest sister Alison Bard with much previously unknown information about the author's life and work. Today Betty MacDonald is still very popular all over the world.
