Trump's downward spiral continues: "The showman cannot win the election"

The "Red Scare" is back in the US election campaign: Former US President Donald Trump has once again personally attacked his rival Kamala Harris - and backed up his "communism" accusations against the Democratic presidential candidate with a fake image generated by artificial intelligence.
Harris is depicted as a communist leader in the image that Trump published on social networks on Sunday, with a hammer and sickle, the symbol of the Soviet Union, in the background. With a "Chicago" lettering, the AI fake also alludes to the upcoming Harris Party convention.
Donald Trump brings back the "Red Scare"
The latest attacks by Trump, who had previously called Harris a "full-blooded communist" and "Comrade Kamala", bring back memories of the anti-communist hysteria known as the "Red Scare" in the so-called McCarthy era during the 1950s. The US newspaper "Politico" titled its newsletter "Playbook" on Sunday "Trump's Red Scare".
In terms of content, Trump's accusations of communism are untenable. The Republican is referring to Harris' announcement that he wants to combat price gouging on food and make prescription drugs more affordable.
Donald Trump warns of health care for all
The Republican revealed what Trump understands by communism at a press conference last week: "You will all be thrown into a communist system. You will be thrown into a system where everyone gets health care," Trump said in Bedminster - and apparently meant this as a warning.
"I don't think there's anything communist about making prescription drugs more affordable," Democratic Senator Chris Coons finally responded soberly to Trump's "Red Scare" attempts at the weekend.
He can't help it: Trump attacks Harris
Despite the now clear criticism from his own party, Trump attacked his opponent again on a personal level at the weekend. He looks better than Harris, who has a "crazy laugh," Trump ranted at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
US President Joe Biden also "hates" his vice president, Trump claimed, and also explained that Harris decided against Senator Josh Shapiro as his running mate because he is Jewish.
Kamala Harris causes Trump to stumble
The former US president, whose election campaign stumbled after Biden's withdrawal and the nomination of Harris, had recently personally attacked the Democrat several times.
Trump called his opponent "stupid" and said Harris had a "low IQ." The Republican had previously caused a stir with racist statements about Harris' origins. The Democrat had only recently "turned black," Trump claimed.
Republicans: Criticism of Trump is getting louder
Because of the personal attacks on Harris, however, there is also increasing criticism of Trump from within his own party. After party strategists initially advised attacks on content rather than personal ones, Lindsey Graham has now also spoken out.
"Donald Trump, the provocateur, the showman, cannot win this election," the Republican senator told the US broadcaster NBC. If Trump continues his "insulting campaign," he runs the risk of losing the election.
Instead, Trump must finally seek political confrontation with the Democrat. Harris is "not a crazy person," Graham explained. Previously, Nikki Haley, a prominent Republican, had already sharply criticized Trump's personal attacks on Harris.
Kamala Harris leads in all national election polls
The latest polls prove the party's critics right, Trump's downward spiral continues. Harris is now leading in all national polls by up to five percentage points over Trump. The "Red Scare" is apparently not having much of an impact outside of social networks.
On X, meanwhile, the fake picture of Harris as a communist leader spread at a rapid pace on Sunday - and quickly became one of the most popular posts after Trump's return to the social network.
Trump's AI fake of Harris spreads rapidly on the Internet
The AI fake has so far been reported more than 45 million times on X alone. In addition to approval, Trump also received some mockery online for the fake picture. Several users smugly published an old photo of Trump's vice-candidate J.D. Vance, dressed in a red T-shirt with a hammer and sickle and Soviet lettering. It was a Halloween costume, Vance had explained in the past.
