Until shortly before the end of regular time, France looked like the sure winner. 2024 Olympic Games: Germany fights back
The team of national coach Alfred Gislason got off to an incredibly bad start. The attack in particular faltered, and the DHB team repeatedly failed to score with free throws against the incredibly strong Vincent Gérard. The French, driven by the frenetic 27,000 spectators in Lille, pulled away goal by goal. At one point Germany was even five goals behind, but by half-time they had fought back from 12:17 to 14:17.
After half-time the team played much better and, led by the now outstanding German goalkeeper David Späth, crawled back goal by goal, first equalizing at 25:25 and then even taking the lead at 26:25.
But France did not give up, struck back and so a real thriller ensued in the final phase, in which France already looked like the sure winners, but then the DHB team miraculously managed to make it into extra time.
In this, the game was again completely balanced for most of the extra time. Barely 15 seconds before the end, France managed to equalize at 34:34. But in response, the outstanding Renars Uscins plucked up the courage and scored the much-celebrated victory.
