Gonzalo Peillat celebrates after his goal for Germany
SEMIFINAL! Germany's men's hockey team remains on course for gold!
As they did three years ago in Tokyo, the team around captain Mats Grambusch (33) knocks Argentina out of the tournament. In a hard-fought quarterfinal, the score is 3:2 (2:1) - because Justus Weigand (29) scores the winning goal (54th) and an Argentinian scores for Germany!
Gonzalo Peillat (31) won the Olympic gold medal with the South Americans in Rio in 2016. Eight years later, he also knocks his home country out of the tournament.
The penalty corner specialist, who has been playing in Mannheim since 2016 and has had a German passport for two years, scores from a set piece. His penalty corner was deflected unstoppably by an Argentinian to make it 2-1 (24th minute).
Teo Hinrichs put Germany in the lead.
Peillat didn't mind, the defender turned to celebrate for Germany - even though his brother-in-law, Thomas Habif (28), was on the field with the Argentinians!
Germany in the semifinals for the sixth time
Germany got off to a great start against defensive and unpleasant South Americans. Teo Hinrichs (24) scored to take the lead (9th minute). But just two minutes later Argentina equalized after a penalty corner (Casella/11th minute).
Bitter: The Argentinians also equalized their former compatriot's renewed lead in the last quarter (Mazzilli/48th minute). In the closing stages, Germany scored again. And still had to tremble until the end.
In the last seconds, the men's hockey team had to survive two penalty corners - which goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg (21) saved superbly.
Strong: Our men's hockey team are in the Olympic semifinals for the sixth time in a row! India will be waiting there on Tuesday. Germany lost the match for third place against the Olympic bronze medalist in Tokyo in 2021 - perfect time for revenge.
In the second semifinal, Holland will face Spain.
