Thanks to a furious comeback, the German golfer can celebrate a historic medal at the end. Esther Henseleit has sensationally won the silver medal at the Olympics! The German golfer from Hamburg impressed on the fourth and final day with a furious comeback and moved up eleven places - to silver. It is the first German medal ever in an Olympic golf tournament, the victory went to the Australian Lydia Ko, with the Chinese Janet Lin coming third. "It's really unbelievable," said Henseleit after her coup: "I knew that I had to do something special today to win a medal. I did it. Standing here, holding the thing in my hand, is just incredible." The 25-year-old stayed five strokes under par on the final day and played her best round of the tournament by far with 66 strokes. On the previous days it was 73, 72 and 69 strokes on the par-72 Le Golf National course. Olympics: Henseleit narrowly misses gold medal This was almost enough to win gold: Henseleit finished the tournament eight strokes under par and only needed two strokes more than the Australian winner Ko, who has now completed her medal collection after silver in Rio 2016 and bronze in Tokyo 2021. Tokyo Olympic champion Nelly Korda slipped a full 15 places on the final day and ended up in a disappointing shared 22nd place. On the last holes, Henseleit kept her nerve and also mastered the difficult hole 15 with numerous water hazards. Starting the last day in 13th place, she played a total of six under par with seven birdies and one bogey on the final round. Henseleit: "I was relatively nervous" Her husband Reece Phillips, who accompanied Henseleit around the course as a caddy, was able to calm her down again and again and give his wife valuable tips. Before the last shots, a smile kept crossing the 25-year-old's lips. Particularly interesting: Even after the first of the four tournament days, Henseleit said: "I was relatively nervous. It doesn't happen very often that we play in front of so many spectators. I had a lot of fun and the atmosphere is just incredibly good." She was also not one of the favorites: Although she is currently the best German golfer, she never played for a tournament victory this year. Henseleit won the last one in February 2022 on the European Tour in Kenya. In the clubhouse, Henseleit was seen completely relaxed at the end, laughing again and again - and can now be happy about her sensational medal. The second German starter Alexandra Försterling (Berlin) finished the Olympic golf tournament in 35th place with a total of 292 strokes.
