Donald Trump currently has only one goal: He absolutely wants to return to the White House. But to do so, he must first get past his Democratic rival Kamala Harris, who, according to recent polls, is currently just ahead of the Republican. But Harris is not Trump's only problem. According to experts, a very specific decision could have ruined Trump's chances of winning the US election in November.
Could this woman possibly cost Donald Trump victory?
In a conversation with the online portal "Newsweek", several experts explain that the reappointment of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court could potentially cost Trump victory. Trump himself had campaigned for the devout Catholic until the very end. The problem is that Barrett is not only deeply religious, but also an opponent of abortion. As an associate judge on the Supreme Court, she can play a decisive role in shaping jurisprudence in the USA. A fact that has recently fueled the mood in the country enormously.
Background information on abortion in the USA after the Dobbs ruling:
・As a reminder: Since the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling was overturned in 2022 with the Dobbs ruling, there has no longer been any nationwide protection of the right to abortion in the USA.
・Millions of people now have no or only limited access to abortion. The US government is thus violating its human rights obligations. Amy Coney Barrett was also significantly involved in this.
・The then US President Donald Trump had nominated Coney Barrett himself in 2022 as the successor to the long-serving judge on the Supreme Court of the United States, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on September 18, 2020, and thus changed the conservative 5-4 majority to a 6-3 majority, which could have led to the end of the right to abortion in the first place.
Controversial judge Amy Coney Barrett could have destroyed Trump's chances of victory
In fact, Barrett not only vehemently votes against women deciding whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term, but also against the health insurance for all known as Obamacare and against marriage for gays. Instead, she advocates gun ownership and a traditional image of the family. It is no secret that many voters have recently been dissatisfied with the court's conservative judges. And that could also be reflected on the ballot papers, the experts are sure.
Experts are certain: Abortion debate will decide victory or defeat in the US election campaign
Lanae Erickson of the US think tank "Third Way" explained to "Newsweek" that in such a close race, any issue could cost a candidate the election, "but the Dobbs decision could be at the top of the list."
"Every time abortion rights have been on the ballot since Dobbs, voters have sided with reproductive freedom, and the Democrats have performed above average," Erickson continued.
Abortion is considered the second most important election issue nationwide
According to the latest poll by the "New York Times", abortion is the second most important US election issue nationwide, behind the economy. 22 percent of voters put the economy first, 14 percent say that abortion is the most important issue. This trend has also carried over to states such as Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina, where abortion is also second after the economy. These US states are considered swing states, whose voting behavior alternates between Republicans and Democrats.
Expert believes Harris victory is possible
Even though abortion still ranks behind the economy in the most important contested states, the issue has become the number one issue for three important voting groups: women, young voters and black voters. Strategist Jay Townsend told Newsweek that if Harris wins in November, "reproductive freedom will be one of the reasons."
Harris is also aware of this, and is making the issue of abortion the focus of her campaign. Her message is clear: "Democrats want this to be a free country, and they trust voters to make their own decisions about how they live their lives," Harris said recently at the Democratic Party convention.
