Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj is expected in Washington on Friday to sign a raw materials agreement negotiated with the USA. The exact content is not known. According to Ukrainian sources, the USA and Ukraine are to jointly extract raw materials on Ukrainian territory. The proceeds are to go into a joint fund. The agreement does not contain any explicit commitment by the USA regarding the security of Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump sees the agreement as a quid pro quo for military aid provided by Washington. After his visit to Washington, Zelenskyj will travel to Great Britain at the weekend to consult with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other European politicians.
Despite the efforts of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump continues to show no inclination to offer Ukraine security guarantees in connection with an end to the war. An upcoming agreement on natural resources with the US is all that Ukraine will need against Russia, Trump said on Thursday at a meeting with Starmer in Washington. The US would provide the necessary backing "because we will be over there, we will be at work" under this agreement. "We will have a lot of people over there." He will sign the agreement with Zelensky on Friday, Trump continued.
