EU foreign policy chief: The free world needs a new leader
The verbal battle between Volodymyr Selensky and Donald Trump in the Oval Office has sparked international outrage. The reactions at a glance:
Immediately after the failed meeting, top politicians from Ukraine demonstratively expressed their support for President Selensky. He is right, explained Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal on X. "Peace without guarantees is not possible." Parliament President Ruslan Stefantschuk said: "Nobody has the right to forget that in this war Russia is the aggressor and Ukraine is the victim of aggression."
From Germany, CDU leader Friedrich Merz addressed the Ukrainian president directly on X: "We stand by Ukraine in good times and in difficult times. We must never confuse the aggressors and the victims in this terrible war."
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) emphasized Ukraine's desire for peace. "Nobody wants peace more than the citizens of Ukraine!" wrote Scholz on X. "That is why we are looking together for a path to a lasting and just peace." In view of Trump's threat to abandon Ukraine in the defensive fight against Russia, Scholz emphasized: "Ukraine can rely on Germany - and on Europe."
SPD co-party leader Lars Klingbeil wrote that after the open dispute between the USA and Ukraine, he saw only one way out: a stronger Europe. "The behavior of the US government shows once again that Europe must take its future more into its own hands. We must become stronger together at all levels," Klingbeil wrote on X. "Germany must and will lead the way. Also to help Ukraine."
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote to Selenskij: "Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone," she explained on X. "We will continue to work with you on a just and lasting peace."
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas believes that Europeans have a duty to take on a leadership role after the scandal. "Today it has become clear that the free world needs a new leader," she wrote on X. "It is up to us Europeans to accept this challenge."
French President Emmanuel Macron criticized Trump's "perpetrator-victim reversal" and declared that in the war, Russia was the aggressor and the Ukrainian people the attacked. It was right three years ago to help Ukraine and impose sanctions on Russia, and it is right to continue to do so today. We must respect those who have fought from the beginning.
Top politicians in other European countries also pledged their support to Ukraine. "You are not alone," wrote Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on X. "Spain is on your side," wrote Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on X.
Estonia's Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna declared that the only obstacle to peace was Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to continue his war of aggression. "If Russia stops fighting, there will be no more war. If Ukraine stops fighting, there will be no more Ukraine." Europe must take action now.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Störe wrote: "What we have seen from the White House today is serious and disheartening." Trump accusing Zelensky of playing with World War III is deeply inappropriate. Norway stands by Ukraine. "We hope that the Trump administration also understands how important a just and lasting peace in Ukraine is."
