Not in common usage - Trump renames Gulf of Mexico - Brits reject change FOCUS Online • 3 hours • 1 minute reading time Donald Trump has renamed the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America". Britain is reacting cautiously to the move. US President Donald Trump has officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. He made this decision a few hours after taking office. However, British government agencies plan not to adopt the change until it becomes common usage in English. "Cannot be renamed by a single nation" The British "Telegraph" reported that the United Kingdom will continue to use the current name. "The Gulf cannot be renamed by a single nation," explained a British source. The United Kingdom will only adopt the new name if it is widely used. Trump argued that the Gulf "belongs to us" and that the USA does "most of the work" there. In his order, he said that the Gulf would play a significant role in America's future and should therefore be renamed the Gulf of America. The Telegraph also reports that this decision will be implemented on official US maps within the next 30 days. Mexico resists Mexico has already announced its opposition to the renaming. The Telegraph quotes Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum as saying: "For us it will remain the Gulf of Mexico and for the whole world it will remain the Gulf of Mexico." Sheinbaum also joked that Mexico could refer to the US as "Mexican America."
