There are a total of twelve dissenters in the CDU/CSU. Many MPs in the FDP are also refusing to support it. The Union's motion failed because of these MPs. The Union faction's draft law to limit migration, which was hotly debated because of the AfD's support, failed in the Bundestag. Union parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz (CDU) was disappointed that there were also two no votes, five abstentions and 16 non-votes from the FDP parliamentary group. The SPD, the Greens and the Left Party had unanimously rejected the plans and strongly criticized them - in terms of content and because, in their view, no law should be introduced into the Bundestag that the AfD could help to gain a majority.
