The Union has not found a majority for its law for more stringent migration policy. There are a total of twelve dissenters in the CDU/CSU. Many MPs in the FDP are also refusing to support it. The Union's motion failed because of these MPs.
The Union faction's draft law to limit migration, which was hotly debated because of the AfD's support, failed in the Bundestag. Chair of the session Petra Pau announced that the "influx limitation law" had not found a majority. Accordingly, 692 MPs cast their votes: 338 yes votes, 349 no votes and five abstentions.
According to the Bundestag administration, 184 Union MPs voted for the draft. Twelve MPs from the faction did not cast their votes.
The dissenters in the CDU/CSU are
Helge Braun
Monika Grütters
Thomas Heilmann
Roderich Kiesewetter
Yvonne Magwas
Martin Plum
Antje Tillmann
Astrid Timmermann-Fechter
Marco Wanderwitz
Sabine Weiss
Annette Widmann-Mauz
Elisabeth Winkelmeier-Becker
There were no no votes or abstentions from the parliamentary group.
In the FDP, a remarkable number of MPs refused their support. Prominent members of the party also distanced themselves.
The following FDP MPs did not vote
Valentin Abel
Renata Alt
Jens Brandenburg
Marco Buschmann
Thomas Hacker
Katrin Helling-Plahr
Manuel Höferlin
Christoph Hoffmann
Ann-Veruschka Jurisch
Karsten Klein
Lukas Köhler
Konstantin Kuhle
Ria Schröder
Stephan Seiter
Johannes Vogel
Nicole Westig
The former Minister of Justice Buschmann was ill and was therefore absent from the Bundestag today.
Those who voted no were:
Anikó Glogowski-Merten
Ulrich Lechte
The abstentions were:
Jens Beeck
Nils Gründer
Carina Konrad
Kristine Lütke
Matthias Seestern-Pauly
There were 75 yes votes from the AfD, one AfD MP did not vote. Five independents, seven BSW MPs and 67 FDP MPs also supported the plan. Union parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz (CDU) was disappointed that there were also two no votes, five abstentions and 16 non-votes from the FDP parliamentary group.
The SPD, the Greens and the Left Party had unanimously rejected the plans and strongly criticized them - in terms of content and because, in their view, no law should be introduced into the Bundestag that the AfD could help to gain a majority.
