The first attempts failed - Italy is bringing migrants to Albania again

WELT The first attempts failed - Italy is bringing migrants to Albania again 1 hour • 1 minute reading time Italy's right-wing government has twice failed in court in its attempt to have asylum applications decided outside the EU. The "Albania model" is considered controversial - the Meloni government is now making a third attempt. Despite previous defeats in court, Italy has brought migrants to Albania again. After a journey of several days across the Mediterranean, an Italian Navy ship with 49 refugees on board arrived at the port of the Albanian city of Shengjin, as the Italian news agency Ansa reported. Their asylum applications are now to be decided there. Italy is the first state in the European Union to set up camps outside the EU to decide on migrants' asylum applications. The "Albania model" of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's right-wing government is controversial. Other European governments are following it closely, however. The first two attempts in October and November, however, failed due to the judiciary. The Italian authorities took migrants on board in the central Mediterranean and brought them to reception centers in Albania. Both times the people ultimately had to be brought to Italy. In the judges' opinion they did not come from safe countries of origin. According to Ansa, the 49 migrants are men from Bangladesh, Egypt, Gambia and the Ivory Coast. Before traveling to Albania, they were stopped on a boat off the Italian Mediterranean island of Lampedusa on their way across the Mediterranean to Europe.
