Former President Donald Trump: The plans envisage him as the leader.
Trump claims to have known nothing about "Project 2025," a plan to overthrow democracy - even though his contacts are deeply entangled in the network.
Former US President Donald Trump does not know who is behind "Project 2025" - at least that is what he announced on social media. "Project 2025" represents a right-wing conservative roadmap for the next Republican president, as the news channel CNN reports. Part of the plan is, among other things, the transformation of democracy into an autocracy - preferably under Trump. The connection between "Project 2025" and Trump seems to be clearer than he would like to admit publicly.
The question arises: who is behind the project? According to CNN, at least 140 people who worked in the Trump administration were involved. These include six of his former cabinet secretaries, four ambassadors he nominated and numerous contributors to his controversial immigration policy.
One of them is former US attorney Brett Tolman. He was a driving force behind Trump's criminal justice reform law and is listed as a contributor to the "Mandate for Leadership", the extensive manifesto of the project to transform the executive branch.
What is "Project 2025"?
According to information from CNN, "Project 2025" was launched by the Heritage Foundation, a right-wing conservative organization that supported Trump shortly after his victory in 2016. The document is intended to provide a roadmap for the first 180 days of a new administration and train thousands of people to fill positions in the government.
This would violate many democratic principles, as the news portal "Watson" reports. For example, the plan is to override the constitution and destroy democratic control of the president's power. In addition, the rights of the LQBTQ+ community would be massively restricted and thousands of officials would be fired.
"'Project 2025' is the plan of Trump's Republican MAGA allies to undermine democratic checks and balances and consolidate power in the Oval Office if he wins," warned the Biden administration. "MAGA" stands for "Make America great again" - Trump's campaign slogan.
"Project 2025" director was employed in Trump's cabinet
Despite all the evidence of Trump's involvement in "Project 2025," his campaign spokeswoman Danielle Alvarez emphasizes that Trump only supports the Republican party platform and the agenda on his own website. In a statement, she said: "Team Biden and the Democratic National Committee are spreading lies and fear-mongering because they have nothing else to offer."
But despite such statements, it seems obvious that Trump's network is deeply woven into Project 2025. For example, Paul Dans, who heads Project 2025, was a high-ranking official in the White House during Trump's time - and he has already announced that he hopes to work for his former boss again.
The numerous connections between Trump and Project 2025 make the former president's attempt to distance himself from it seem rather implausible. It remains to be seen how this political balancing act will continue.
