Kamala Harris: The internet loves Kamala - TikTok is full of fan videos

DER SPIEGEL Kamala Harris: The internet loves Kamala - TikTok is full of fan videos 23 hours • 2 minutes reading time The left-wing, young and female voters in particular are celebrating Kamala Harris as the new presidential candidate. Fan videos are piling up online: Harris is the "femininominon" that Gen Z has been waiting for. It is no surprise that Kamala Harris is now presenting herself as the counterpart to Joe Biden in the election campaign. She is young, agile and, above all, her team is proving that they understand social media and the humor of Gen Z. But it is not just Kamala who loves the internet, the internet LOVES Kamala - at least the bubble of young, democratic voters. Anyone who has scrolled through Instagram, TikTok and X in the past few days could not avoid one thing: fan videos about Kamala Harris. The timelines were filled with loving Coconut memes and video montages of songs by Taylor Swift, Charlie XCX, or Chappell Roan. DER SPIEGEL summarizes the most important news of the day for you: What was really important today - and what it means. Your daily newsletter update at 6 p.m. Subscribe now for free. A TikTok video from the account "Kamalamenomenon", which is entirely dedicated to the Democratic candidate for the presidential nomination, shows collages of Harris laughing, with her husband and Donald Trump in "ugly" pants. The song "Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl" by Chappell Roan is superimposed on it. The US singer Roan is particularly popular in young, left-wing and queer communities. And her song "Femininominon" - composed of "feminine" and "phenomenon" - has also become a Kamala anthem within a short time. For many young voters in particular, Kamala Harris embodies this feminine phenomenon that they have longed for so much: It is time for their femininomenon and for the election campaign to be fun again. Because the left-wing Gen Z wants one thing above all else: good content - in politics and in their feeds. Harris' team? So they quickly switched gears and uploaded their own Femininomenon video to TikTok. The comments are flooded with coconut and palm tree emojis, and Harris' planned move into the White House is dubbed "Project Coconut Tree". One user writes: "We have the choice between two projects, this is the better choice." "Project Coconut" is supposed to be the counterpart to the Trump supporter plan "Project 2025." The manifesto of the right-wing conservative Heritage Foundation envisages an ultra-conservative and right-wing agenda under a Republican president, preferably Trump. Harris and "Project Coconut Tree" come at just the right time for many. The Democratic candidate is a strong advocate for women's rights, so it's no surprise that young women are now creating Kamala fan videos to music by even more strong women. And so Harris continues to dance to Swift, Charlie XCX and Roan across the smartphone screens.
