First Democrat calls on Biden to withdraw
Joe Biden: The incumbent US president did poorly in the TV debate.
Joe Biden looked old in the TV duel against Donald Trump. Now the first Democrats are expressing doubts - and calling on him to withdraw.
A first US Democratic congressman is calling on Joe Biden to withdraw from his presidential candidacy. House Representative Lloyd Doggett (77) from the state of Texas expressed hope in a statement on Tuesday that Biden would make "the painful and difficult decision" to "drop out" of the race. "I respectfully urge him to do so," Doggett added.
Biden has achieved a lot at home and abroad and has rebuilt the country after the pandemic and the years under Trump. "But for more than a year, many Americans have been dissatisfied with their voting decision," said Doggett. Biden is well behind Trump and his performance in the debate did not initiate a turnaround.
"Our most important consideration must be who has the greatest hope of saving our democracy from an authoritarian takeover by a criminal and his gang," writes the Democrat. "President Biden saved our democracy by saving us from Trump in 2020. He must not hand us over to Trump in 2024."
Nancy Pelosi also commented on Biden's performance in the duel against Trump. The Democrat and former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives said: "It is a legitimate question whether Biden had an episode or is suffering from an illness." In her opinion, both candidates must account for their physical and mental health.
