Party conference confirms CSU leader Söder with large majority

CSU party leader Markus Söder was re-elected at the party congress in Nuremberg. With 87.6 percent, however, the result was worse than last time. Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder was confirmed in his office as party leader by a large majority at the CSU party conference in Nuremberg on Friday. Söder was the only candidate to receive 600 of the 685 valid delegate votes. Thus 87.6 per cent stood behind the party leader. A total of 694 votes were cast, nine votes were invalid. Söder thus landed just above the result of 87.4 percent in his first election at the beginning of 2019, but fell short of the result in his re-election in October 2019 - when it was 91.3 percent. Söder, who accepted the election, had been officially proposed for re-election by Bavaria's state parliament president Ilse Aigner. Söder had previously sworn in the delegates to a strenuous final spurt of the election campaign and emphasized the unity with the sister party CDU and Union candidate for chancellor Armin Laschet (CDU). He said he was confident that the CDU/CSU could close the poll gap with the SPD in the remaining two weeks until the election date. Söder demonstratively backed Laschet, who is expected to be a guest at the CSU party conference in Nuremberg on Saturday. Previously, there had been skeptical voices from the CSU about Laschet's candidacy in light of historically weak poll numbers.
