Georgia Republican officials reject Trump's calls to overturn election results

Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, both Republicans, on Monday rebuffed President Donald Trump's calls to overturn the state's election results more than a week after they certified Joe Biden as the winner. The statements by the two officials amount to an unusual public rejection of Trump, who continues to exert immense influence in the party and whose shadow hangs over January's runoff election, in which two Trump-allied GOP senators are hoping to retain their seats. For weeks, Trump has made a series of unfounded claims of fraud in the state, for which there is no evidence. Biden won the state with more than 12,000 votes, and both Kemp and Raffensperger have pledged they will abide by the law. The Secretary of State, who is an elected constitutional officer, has oversight over elections that cannot be overridden by executive order," Cody Hall, the communications director for Kemp, said in a statement. "As the Governor has said repeatedly, he will continue to follow the law and encourage the Secretary of State to take reasonable steps -- including a sample audit of signatures -- to restore trust and address serious issues that have been raised." Election officials, however, have said it is physically impossible to do an "audit of signatures" from mail-in ballots. Trump and Kemp have previously demanded an "audit of signatures" from mail-in ballots, but election officials have repeatedly said it is literally impossible at this stage in the process. Election officials already verified voters' signatures twice, and then the ballots were permanently separated from the envelopes. Also on Monday, Raffensperger insisted during a press conference that "the truth matters" and pushed back against the "massive" spigot of election disinformation being spread by Trump and Republican allies. "There are those who are exploiting the emotions of many Trump supporters with fantastic claims, half-truths, misinformation, and frankly, they are misleading the President as well, apparently," he said. He also said that a post-election audit, along with the ongoing recount, prove that the election was fair. "Once this recount is complete, everyone in Georgia will be able to have even more confidence in the results of our elections," he said, adding that the recount is on track to finish by a Wednesday night deadline. The secretary of state said his office will continue to investigate any credible claims of illegal voting and any violations of state election law. According to Raffensperger, there are currently more than 250 open cases of election irregularities still being investigated from 2020. Nearly 5 million votes were cast statewide. The President has repeatedly criticized both men. He called Kemp "hapless" on Monday and urged the governor to use his emergency powers to "overrule" Raffensperger, a day after he said on Fox News he was "ashamed" he endorsed the governor. The President has also called Raffensperger an "enemy of the people" last week. Trump has announced he will travel to the Peach State this week to campaign for Republican Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, who face two Senate runoff elections in January that will determine which party controls the chamber. The two senators have called for Raffensperger to resign, claiming wrongdoing but without providing any specific evidence to back up their claims. Roy Black's Version of "Jingle Bells" in German

The melody of this popular Christmas carol is the same as it is in English yet it is not a direct translation. In fact, the German song title translates to "​A little white snowman."​ Whether you are a student of the German language or simply wish to fill your home with a classic German carol over the holidays, this is a fun song to learn. "Ein Kleiner weißer Schneemann" Lyrics “Jingle Bells” in German Melodie: "Jingle Bells" - Volksweise (traditional) Deutsche Version: Werner Twardy (1926-1977) This German version of "Jingle Bells" was written by the composer Werner Twardy for German pop singer, Roy Black, who recorded it in 1968. Twardy wrote many songs for Black over his career, including many Christmas songs. One might compare Black and his holiday songs to the American Bing Crosby. As you look at the English translation, you will notice that the lyrics are not like those we are familiar with. There is no "Dashing through the snow" or "Laughing all the way." Instead, the German lyrics feature a snowman who invites us on a sleigh ride through the woods. You will also notice that Twardy does not translate "Jingle Bells." You can sign up for free right here. Trump is Trump. There's nothing new to say about the man. But there is still lots to learn about his enablers. So many people, from GOP functionaries to Fox News hosts, are helping him to undermine democracy by denying the election and attacking reality. So many people are complicit. People like Maria Bartiromo. Formerly an acclaimed journalist, known around the world for making CEOs tell the truth, now she tees up Trump to recite lie after lie. Her Sunday morning call with Trump on Fox News was his first "interview" since he lost the election, but it wasn't a real interview at all. He wasn't ready to acknowledge that he lost, and neither was she. He displayed delusional weakness. She was complicit. And she's far from the only one. GOP leaders stay silent Ron Brownstein on CNN Sunday night: As Trump's conspiracy theory about the "rigged" election "gets more and more fantastical and far-reaching, implicating the DOJ, the FBI, and Republican governors, the silence of Republicans in Congress — Mitch McConnell in particular, Kevin McCarthy in particular, who are allowing this poison to spread in the American political system — looks more and more like a modern analogue to the silence of Republican congressional leaders during the rampages of Joe McCarthy in the early 1950s. I think history will have no trouble finding a parallel between Mitch McConnell's efforts to kind of look the other way and what so many Republican leaders did until Joseph Welch said, at long last, sir 'have you no decency?'" Trump is backsliding He lost the election nearly four weeks ago yet he refuses to admit it. Judging by his tweets, he's spiraling even deeper into denial. The Bartiromo interview was a sign that he's prepared to do battle in public -- a disturbing display of weakness that some people interpret as strength. His Thanksgiving evening Q&A with reporters was another sign of the same thing. After holding a call with members of the military, he fielded questions for the first time in three weeks — the "longest gap" of his presidency — mostly by deflecting and deceiving. When he walked out, one reporter asked "Is this the language of a dictator?" and another said, "Mr. President, some people say you're denying reality." On Sunday's "Reliable Sources," Jonathan Rauch placed Trump's recent statements in the context of information warfare. Trump is running a "classic Russian-style disinfo campaign," known as the "firehose of falsehood," which is when you "push out as many different stories and conspiracy theories and lies and half-truths as you possibly can," Rauch said. "The goal here is to confuse people, and he's doing very well at that. This is a classic propaganda tactic." >> Craig Mazin, the creator of HBO's "Chernobyl," reacted to my segment with Rauch by reprising one of the most memorable lines from his series: "The real danger is that if we hear enough lies, then we no longer recognize the truth at all." The Murdochs own this Trumpism is a big part of Fox's business model. The men who control Fox, Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch, were evidently pleased enough by Bartiromo's propaganda, proud enough of her Trump sycophancy, that they rebroadcast her 10am ET hour at 3pm. Right afterward, at 4pm, news anchor Eric Shawn matter-of-factly dismantled what Trump and Bartiromo had just built. (No wonder why Trump keeps attacking Fox's weekend news anchors.) Shawn said Trump "doubled down on his claims of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 elections even though local and national election officials as well as federal and state courts in multiple states -- and in some cases the Trump campaign's own lawyers -- have said there is no evidence to prove that." He added, "Experts say such claims are simply unsupported falsehoods that are not backed up by any facts." That's clear, convincing language. So then why did Fox broadcast all of Trump's claims without any real-time followups? A Fox spokesperson did not respond to my inquiries. Trump said Hannity 'gets it,' but... During the Sunday morning phoner with Bartiromo, Trump praised Mark Levin's show "last night," even though Saturday's airing was just a repeat of a six-day-old episode of Levin's show. He also said "Sean Hannity, he knows, he gets it. He gets it." Meaning... what? That Hannity believes Trump won the election? On Sunday night, Hannity posted a tweet that said the media helped "drive Trump from office," which was notable primarily for his admission that Trump's presidency is over. To understand some of the rage on the far-right, take a look at the replies to Hannity's tweet. >> A few days ago I quoted a longtime on-air staffer at Fox saying that "our audience has absolutely been radicalized," and that's what a lot of this is about. The audience. Bartiromo's Sunday morning show has a much bigger audience than the Fox newscasts later in the day. Darcy's questions Oliver Darcy writes: "In the past Maria Bartiromo has been portrayed as a member of Fox's 'straight news' division — an arm of Fox that Bret Baier and Chris Wallace serve as the faces for. So it's worth asking: Where are they? Are they OK with their colleague fanning the flames of these deranged conspiracy theories? Do they think that deranged behavior represents them well?" >> Darcy's other questions: "Is Trump 'coming out of his shell' so to speak? Will he call into Hannity and 'Fox & Friends' in the coming days?" The irony is rich Oliver Darcy adds: "If you've watched Fox News over the past week, you've no doubt seen a segment or two assailing reporters for lobbing supposed 'softball' questions at Biden. These segments have dominated Fox's talk shows lately. Which made Bartiromo's "interview" a display of astounding double standards and heaps of hypocrisy. This memory opens up a ‘vista’ into the past which includes longing for the Sunday evenings of the speaker’s childhood. T. S. Eliot, ‘Mr Eliot’s Sunday Morning Service’. It’s a bold poet who uses, as the single-word opening line for a poem, the word ‘Polyphiloprogenitive’ (meaning, more or less, ‘fond of producing offspring’). In this challenging quatrain poem, Eliot explores religious ideas as we go from ‘sapient sutlers’ (wise merchants) to Sweeney, Eliot’s modern knuckle-dragging man, who’s swilling waters in his bath. (CNN)President Donald Trump found himself trapped in an election riddle of his own making Friday -- continuing to push false claims that the election was a "total scam," even after another humiliating court rebuke in Pennsylvania, while insisting that his supporters should turn out in Georgia's January Senate runoff elections despite concerns about fraud that he has sown. With the eyes of the political universe focused on turning out voters in Georgia -- where the two runoff elections will determine which party controls the US Senate -- the President's relentless attacks on the state's voting apparatus, its tabulating process and its Republican secretary of state are prompting handwringing among GOP strategists and state leaders who fear those attacks are eroding confidence in elections at a time when they need to turn out as many of their voters as possible to reelect Republican Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue on January 5 and hold onto their firewall against a Democrat-controlled House and White House. Democrats deride 'dark' money, but a new analysis shows it helped boost Joe Biden Biden picks up small number of votes in Milwaukee County after Trump-requested recount Pompeo says State Department will 'honor' promise to conduct transition to Biden administration President-elect Joe Biden became the first Democrat in 28 years to win the Peach State, and Trump has been casting doubt about Georgia's election results for weeks now. He's made wild claims in his public remarks, retweeted attorneys and allies who have called for overturning the state's election results, and described the statewide audit -- which was a hand recount of every ballot -- as "meaningless" because of his objections to the signature-verification process. After Georgia certified its results, which confirmed Biden's victory in the state, the Trump campaign requested another recount, which is unlikely to reverse his loss. Trump ratcheted up those attacks when speaking to reporters on Thanksgiving even as he touted his upcoming visit to campaign in Georgia on December 5, claiming without evidence that he was "robbed" with "fraud all over the place" and calling Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger "an enemy of the people." When asked by a reporter why he would expect GOP voters to have confidence after what he described as an illegitimate election and turn out for Loeffler and Perdue, Trump said he had warned the two senators: "Listen you have a fraudulent system ... you have to be very careful." But on Friday, he backtracked as he tweeted a Newsmax story that said his supporters are considering an election boycott in Georgia over fraud claims. After falsely calling the November election a "scam" that he's hoping to overturn, he encouraged people to "get out and help David and Kelly, two GREAT people." Trump's rhetoric, and the way it could undermine Georgia's electoral system, have been troubling to Republican strategists like Alice Stewart, a CNN contributor and native Georgian, who noted that bedrock Republican issues, including maintaining the conservative majority on the Supreme Court -- and preventing Democrats from court packing and enacting liberal policies like the Green New Deal -- will hinge on Republicans defending both Senate seats. Federal appeals court slams Trump campaign efforts to turn tide in Pennsylvania ruling, saying 'claims have no merit' Trump's legal defeats pile up while his attacks on Georgia's election system raise GOP concerns "Without a doubt, if this continues, it's going to be a problem," Stewart said of Trump's baseless allegations about voting in Georgia. "I think every legal and legitimate vote should be counted, but at this stage of the game, to claim there's widespread voter fraud, this claim that there is an election hoax — we need to see some evidence. We need to see what he's talking about." "Otherwise, he needs to drop it and move on, because it's not helpful to the process," Stewart said, noting that she and many of her family members in Georgia voted for Trump because they support his policies. Republican donor Dan Eberhart called on lower-level Republican leaders to "step up or step out right now" and openly challenge Trump's claims before it does irreparable harm to their party. "The party and the Republicans need to be focused on making (Senate Majority Leader) Mitch McConnell stronger right now, which is winning these two seats in Georgia, and then we need to be focused on winning the next election, taking the house back in 2022, and they can't do that if Trump has frozen everything," Eberhart said Friday night on CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront." "These Republican senators, Republican congressmen, Republican governors, they're afraid of the Trump tweet and I think we need to get over that," he said. The challenge facing Republicans was evident Saturday in Georgia where Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel tried to allay concerns from GOP voters about Trump's fraud claims, insisting the runoff election is "not decided." "If you lose your faith and you don't vote and people walk away -- that will decide it," McDaniel told an unsettled crowd at a meet-and-greet in the Atlanta suburb of Marietta. Still not accepting the inevitable Trump made another perplexing about-face Friday. After stating on Thursday night that he would leave the White House in January if Biden's victory is certified by the electoral college, he made the absurd claim on Twitter that "Biden can only enter the White House as President if he can prove that his ridiculous '80,000,000 votes' were not fraudulently or illegally obtained," even though Trump's own authority expires on January 20 when his term ends and his team hasn't been able to offer any credible evidence of fraud. Trump's own appointee, Chairman of the US Election Assistance Commission Ben Hovland, rejected the premise of Trump's tweet Friday night. (The Commission is charged, in part, with testing and certifying voting machines and works closely with election officials around the country). "Those 80 million votes that President-elect Biden has have been confirmed. They have been confirmed by the men and women who run our elections across the country," Hovland said on "Erin Burnett OutFront." "We have certified results in a number of states now, and again the people who run our elections have said that those are the totals." "I believe the President and his allies have one win and 38 losses, they have failed to provide evidence of any widespread fraud to the courts," he added of Trump's court battles. "Clearly Joe Biden has won this race — the election officials who run our elections have said that — and that's how our democracy works." Biden won 306 electoral votes to Trump's 232, and has now become the first presidential candidate to win more than 80 million votes -- posting a margin of more than 6 million over Trump. The dearth of evidence supporting Trump's fraud claims was once again illuminated in the opinion of a three-judge panel for the 3rd US Circuit Court of Appeals Friday that denied the Trump campaign's request to refile its lawsuit challenging the results in Pennsylvania, where Biden enjoys a margin of more than 80,000 votes. "Calling an election unfair does not make it so," Judge Stephanos Bibas, a Trump appointee, wrote for the panel. "Charges require specific allegations and then proof. We have neither here." Highlighting the gulf between the inflammatory charges that Trump and his allies have made outside the courtroom and the flimsy allegations that appear in their court filings, Bibas noted that the Trump campaign never alleged that "any ballot was fraudulent or cast by an illegal voter." "It never alleges that any defendant treated the Trump campaign or its votes worse than it treated the Biden campaign or its votes," Bibas wrote. "Calling something discrimination does not make it so." The three-judge panel also called the Trump campaign's efforts to negate Pennsylvania's certification of votes "unprecedented," adding that the campaign's claims have "no merit." "Tossing out millions of mail-in ballots would be drastic and unprecedented, disenfranchising a huge swath of the electorate and upsetting all down-ballot races too," the opinion said. Though the defeat added to the Trump campaign's humiliating tally of more than 30 courtroom losses or withdrawals in their effort to challenge the election results, the President's attorney Jenna Ellis said on Twitter that their team was moving on to the Supreme Court. Ben Ginsberg, a Republican election lawyer who co-chaired the bipartisan 2013 Presidential Commission on Election Administration, said the Supreme Court taking up the case would be a welcome development to put an end to Trump's counterproductive efforts to unravel democracy. "We should only hope that he takes this case in Pennsylvania up to the Supreme Court, because that will explode the other myth that judges are just going to lay down for him and do his bidding, because they are Republican judges," Ginsberg said on "Erin Burnett OutFront" Friday. "What his followers will see, once he is out of office, is that there were a lengthy string of losses, losses, losses and that in effect is going to be part of his legacy when we look back at this."
