Melanie Trump hides at Donald Trump's inauguration
The world is looking to the United States today. More precisely, to the US capital Washington D.C. There, Donald Trump (78) will be sworn in as US President for the second time. His term of office begins at 12 noon (local time) - this is what the US Constitution stipulates. In Germany it is then 6 p.m.
Donald Trump wants to give his wife Melanie a kiss - her hat prevents him from doing so.
Swearing-in of the 47th US President: Trump's inauguration
The ceremonial ceremony takes place in the Capitol, the seat of the US Congress. And of course all eyes are on Trump himself. But before he appears on the scene, it is she who draws all eyes: Melania Trump (54). She enters the hall buttoned up to the top. Her outfit is surprising - and certainly no coincidence.
The message behind Melania Trump's outfit
We have all long known: fashion is not just a loose combination of clothes. No, fashion can convey messages without the need for words. And Melanie's message today is clear. Her coat buttoned up to the top and the XXL hat that covers her entire eye area are like armor. Armor that is supposed to protect her from the public eye. Her outfit almost screams: "Don't look at me too closely. I don't really want to be here."
Even during the election campaign, Melanie Trump was hardly visible - and not just figuratively speaking. Her husband managed many appearances alone. There was also a rumor that she would not move into the White House at all. According to her own statement, the future First Lady is ready to return to the White House. She recently told the TV channel Fox: "I will be in the White House." But: "If I have to be in New York, I'll be in New York; if I have to be in Palm Beach, I'll be in Palm Beach."
Trump wants to give her a kiss - and fails
But back to the inauguration: When Donald Trump finally enters the hall, he greets his wife in full view of the public. He leans towards her, wants to give her a kiss - but his hat prevents it. There is no tenderness. Nor does the memorable photo that the cameramen on site were surely eagerly awaiting.
An embarrassing faux pas or tactical calculation? Only Melanie can answer this question herself.
