Migration
On Monday, the interior ministers will meet to discuss the security situation in Germany. Urgent action must be taken, said Hesse's CDU minister Poseck.
Wiesbaden - After the violent acts in Magdeburg and Aschaffenburg, the Hessian Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) is calling for "a real change" in migration policy. "The terrible acts of the last few weeks show that the unbridled migration of the last few years has made our country more unsafe," Poseck told the German Press Agency ahead of the special interior ministers' conference this Monday.
"The time for talking is over," he said. Concrete measures are needed immediately. This included turning away illegal immigrants at the border, stopping reception programs and expanding safe countries of origin. "In addition, criminals must be consistently deported, including to problematic countries such as Syria and Afghanistan," said Poseck. This is "about the safety of all of us."
New ways of dealing with the mentally ill
The "terrible acts" in Magdeburg and Aschaffenburg also made it clear that new ways of dealing with the mentally ill are needed. "It is necessary to better network the authorities involved so that measures to protect the population can be taken more quickly and effectively," said the minister.
In addition, security authorities urgently need additional powers. "The federal legislature must finally make it possible to store IP addresses," said Poseck. Authorities must also become more effective internationally. "We need to take our security more into our own hands and at the same time become more independent of information from foreign intelligence services."
Ministers consult digitally
After the violent attack in Aschaffenburg that left two people dead, the interior ministers of the federal and state governments discussed the security situation in Germany in a digital meeting on Monday.
A two-year-old boy and a man were killed and two other people were seriously injured in a knife attack in Aschaffenburg on January 22. A 28-year-old Afghan who was required to leave the country was arrested as the perpetrator.
