The coaching experiment with Nuri Sahin at Borussia Dortmund is over. After just over half a year, the Bundesliga football club is parting ways with its head coach. The club confirmed this on Wednesday morning, after "Sport Bild" and the broadcaster Sky reported the sacking on the morning after BVB's 1:2 defeat at FC Bologna in the Champions League. The Dortmund team is in danger of missing out on a safe place in the knockout round of the premier class due to the defeat.
Sports director Sebastian Kehl informed the team of the separation during the night, it was said. Sahin has already said goodbye to his team.
In the Bundesliga, the Westphalians are currently well off the minimum goal of qualifying for the Champions League. On June 1, BVB were still in the final of the premier class. After three defeats in the first three Bundesliga games of the new year, BVB is already seven points behind fourth place.
Sahin was the eighth BVB coach since Klopp
Since the end of Jürgen Klopp's era almost ten years ago, the coaching position at the club has been a permanent construction site. Sahin is already the eighth coach since 2015 who failed in Dortmund after Klopp left. These included top-class players such as Thomas Tuchel, Lucien Favre and Marco Rose.
After the departure of current Leipzig head coach Rose in the summer of 2022, BVB had coaches with strong Dortmund connections but without much previous experience in Edin Terzic and most recently Sahin. Terzic was the club's youth and assistant coach for years before taking over as head coach of Dortmund in December 2020 for six months and again for two years after Rose's departure.
Although BVB only lost the championship on the last matchday under him in 2023 and reached the Champions League final against Real Madrid (0-2) last summer, the club and Terzic parted ways.
His previous assistant coach Sahin, who only returned to BVB in this role in January 2024, took over his youth club, which he had joined at the age of twelve and for which he made his professional debut at the age of 16, with great advance praise from those in charge.
Promising start, quick disillusionment
The experience of the just 36-year-old as head coach was, however, limited. From 2021 to 2023, the former Turkish international had managed Antalyaspor in his parents' homeland.
After a promising start last summer as the new coach, disillusionment quickly set in in Dortmund. Injury concerns also accelerated BVB's downward spiral.
Sahin was already the focus of public criticism in October. In the meantime, BVB has recovered and still has a chance of advancing directly to the round of 16 in the Champions League. However, the start of the 2025 football year was a complete failure: With a severely weakened squad, Dortmund first lost 2:3 to Bayer Leverkusen, four days later lost 2:4 to newly promoted Kiel after an unacceptable performance and last Friday lost 0:2 in Frankfurt. The next setback followed on Tuesday in Bologna.
