Donald Trump: Allegations about his role in the storming of the US Capitol published

"Increasingly desperate plans" to overturn the election: Special investigator Jack Smith presents a new report on the attack on the US Capitol. The focus on 165 pages: Donald Trump and accomplices.
January 6, 2021 was a turning point in the USA. The unprecedented attack by a mob of Donald Trump's supporters on the center of power in US politics has still not been dealt with. This also applies, and especially, to the role of the former US president himself.
A newly published court document now provides a detailed insight into the election manipulation allegations against Trump. In it, special investigator Jack Smith accuses the Republican of having committed crimes in the fight to retain power after losing the 2020 presidential election.
The document is related to the violent storming of the US Capitol, which left several dead and many injured. Trump is said to have deliberately incited his supporters at the time to prevent the confirmation of Democrat Joe Biden's election victory. As a result of these events, he was charged at the federal level in the capital Washington.
"With his accomplices, the defendant launched a series of increasingly desperate plans to overturn the legitimate election results in seven states that he had lost," the 165-page document states. Trump is said to have knowingly lied to the public, election authorities and his own vice president Mike Pence.
The document includes Trump's comment on the situation surrounding Pence during the attack. An employee warned Trump that Pence could be in real danger. Trump's comment, according to the report: "So what?"
Prosecutor: Trump should not be protected from prosecution
The indictment has been reissued after the US Supreme Court ruled in July that Trump enjoys immunity for certain official acts. This decision forced special investigator Smith to adjust the charges against Trump accordingly in order to move the case forward. The former president and current Republican presidential candidate pleads "not guilty" and describes the charges as a "political witch hunt."
The prosecutors explain why Trump should not be immune from prosecution in the case, basing their arguments on witness statements, social media posts and direct statements from Trump, among other things.
The document - parts of which have been redacted - was published after the judge in charge, Tanya Chutkan, decided to make it available to the public. Smith's team argues that Trump should be brought to justice for his "private crimes" "like any other citizen."
