US President Donald Trump on February 10th in the White House: Trump intervenes in the next hostage release in the Middle East.
US President Donald Trump has given Hamas an ultimatum to release all remaining hostages and threatened harsh consequences if the Islamists do not comply with his demands.
He spoke out in favor of canceling the ceasefire negotiated between Israel and the Palestinian terrorist organization if all remaining hostages are not free by 12 noon on Saturday. If that does not happen, "then all hell will break loose," Trump threatened in the White House in Washington. He emphasized, however, that the decision on this rests with Israel. "I only speak for myself," he said. Israel can ignore this.
"I think many of the hostages are dead"
Trump left open what specific consequences Hamas might have to fear from the US side. "Hamas will find out what I mean," he said when asked. "They are sick people."
He does not assume that the Islamists will follow the demand, Trump continued, adding: "I think many of the hostages are dead." It was a "great human tragedy." It also remained unclear which time zone Trump was referring to with the specific time in the ultimatum.
Hamas had postponed the next release of Israeli hostages, scheduled for this Saturday, indefinitely. Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida said the reason was that Israel was not adhering to the ceasefire agreement. Because of the halt in the hostage releases, the already fragile ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is in jeopardy. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz placed the army still stationed in the Gaza Strip on high alert.
