Thomas Tuchel is to lead the English selection to a title.
According to English media reports, Thomas Tuchel will be the new coach of the English national football team. The daily newspaper The Times reported on Tuesday evening that the 51-year-old had reached an agreement with the English FA. Tuchel is to be officially introduced this week.
He would be the first German team manager of the Three Lions and the third foreigner to hold the post after Sven-Göran Eriksson (2001 to 2006) and Fabio Capello (2007 to 2012). The English FA has been looking for a new head coach since Gareth Southgate resigned after the European Championship final defeat against Spain in July. Most recently, former U21 coach Lee Carsley took over the team led by captain Harry Kane on an interim basis.
The TV channel Sky Sport News had previously reported on Tuesday that some contractual details still had to be negotiated. According to Sky, the association bosses assumed that they would not have to pay compensation to Bayern Munich for Tuchel. The German record champions had parted ways with the 51-year-old at the end of the previous season, and the contract, which was originally due to run until 2025, ended prematurely last summer.
Tuchel was team manager of Chelsea FC from January 2021 to September 2022, and in 2021 he won the Champions League with the Blues. In addition to Tuchel, Pep Guardiola was also mentioned in the English media for the position at the Three Lions. According to the Times, the FA is said to have already contacted Guardiola at the start of the season. The Spaniard's contract with Manchester City expires after the current season. He wants to decide on his future in the "coming weeks", it was said.
