Now a group of Haitian immigrants have heard enough. It was one of the defining moments of the TV debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris this month. Out of context and out of the blue, Trump made a comment about immigrants from Haiti who allegedly eat pets in the city of Springfield (Ohio). This racist claim is still completely unfounded two weeks later - and could have legal consequences. A group of immigrants from the Caribbean state has now filed a so-called citizen criminal charge in Ohio. According to its lawyer, the Haitian Bridge Alliance felt compelled to do this because the criminal authorities themselves would not take any action against the defamation of an entire group. This step is rather unusual, but it certainly has precedents. By law, there must be a hearing before the authorities can deal with the case further. There is no date for such a hearing yet. Springfield has around 58,000 residents, including many people from the Caribbean state of Haiti. The city is currently in a state of emergency. Since last week, dozens of bomb threats have been made to public buildings and schools, and the police have increased their presence. Several buildings, including elementary schools, had to be evacuated.
