Jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny calls for daily protests against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. "Alexej Navalny called on people to protest against the war every day at 7 p.m. and on weekends at 2 p.m.," said his spokeswoman Kira Jarmisch on Wednesday.
“I call on everyone to take to the streets and fight for peace. We - Russia - want to be a nation of peace. Unfortunately, few would call us that today. At least let's not become a nation of frightened silent people," read an appeal published on Twitter. "By cowards who pretend not to notice the aggressive war against Ukraine unleashed by our obviously insane tsar."
Immediately after Russia's invasion of Ukraine last Thursday, people took to the streets in many Russian cities. The regime responded with thousands of arrests. And the authorities said that demonstrations are not allowed during the corona pandemic.
Navalny is the most prominent opponent of President Vladimir Putin in Russia. He survived a poison attack in Russia in 2020 and received medical treatment in Germany.
Upon returning to his homeland in early 2021, Navalny was arrested and sentenced to more than two and a half years in prison for violating probation conditions. Navalny holds Putin personally responsible for the poison attack. The government in Moscow rejects the allegations.
