The top talent from Erfurt, Finn Sonnekalb, has achieved a remarkable victory for the German speed skaters. The 17-year-old won gold in the all-round ranking at the Junior World Championships in Klobenstein, Italy, which includes the results over 500, 1000, 1500 and 5000 meters. In the history of the Junior World Championships since 1972, only two Germans have ever achieved this: Manfred Winter (1974) and Michael Spielmann (1988) both won for the GDR.
Sonnekalb had already won silver in the all-around competition last year, and now he has moved up a notch. The Thuringian won the 1000 and 1500 meters and came third in the 500 meters. Eighth place in the 5000 meters was enough to win the overall. At the end of the competition on Sunday, Sonnekalb also won bronze in the team sprint with Lennart Grabe and Levente Engst from Dresden and silver with Sofie Adeberg in the mixed relay. Sonnekalb was thus involved in all German medals on the open-air track in South Tyrol.
