In top form before the World Cup: Vinzenz Geiger
Nordic combined skier Vinzenz Geiger shone again in the last competition before the World Cup and celebrated his sixth victory of the season ahead of Norway's top star Jarl Magnus Riiber. The Olympic champion from Oberstdorf finished 16 seconds ahead of Riiber in Otepää, Estonia, after a strong performance. The 27-year-old had already relegated the record world champion to second place on Saturday.
On Sunday, Geiger decided the long-running duel 1.5 km before the end when he impressively left Riiber standing. Both are therefore clear favorites at the championships in Trondheim (February 26 to March 9). In the overall World Cup, Geiger is only just behind the Norwegian (1295) with 1214, who is also retiring at the end of the season for health reasons.
Even apart from Geiger, the German performance was impressive. World Cup runner-up Julian Schmid, who was fourth on Saturday, won the pursuit sprint and took third place. Directly behind him, Wendelin Thannheimer achieved the best result of his career in fourth place; a total of five DSV starters finished in the top eight.
Geiger, who is a strong runner, was better than ever, especially on the ski jump. On Saturday he even won the jump ahead of Riiber, and on Sunday he flew to second place with 100.0 m. "First after the jump - that was something new for me," said the Allgäu native a week after his success in the Seefeld Triple.
