Lake Placid. Selina Freitag and Andreas Wellinger lead the German team to a surprising mixed victory in Lake Placid. It was the second success in the third competition this winter. It gives the DSV hope for the upcoming World Championships.
The German ski jumping team surprisingly won the last mixed competition before the World Championships. Andreas Wellinger, Philipp Raimund, Agnes Reisch and Selina Freitag left the favorites Norway and Austria behind in Lake Placid and raised hopes of gold for the championships in Trondheim (February 26 to March 9). For the men in particular, the victory was a balm for the recently battered ski jumping soul.
After six of eight jumps per team, Germany was still in third place before a strong finale followed. Friday brought the DSV quartet into the lead with a jump of 126.5 m, final jumper Wellinger secured the victory with 124.5 m with less run-up. With 963.6 points, it was enough to win against Norway (950.8) and Austria (941.8).
A week earlier, the DSV quartet had finished third in Willingen and had also benefited from a disqualification of the Slovenian Timi Zajc. At the start of the season in Lillehammer, Germany had also won the mixed doubles, but since then the form curve has been pointing downwards, especially among the men.
Victory without Paschke and Schmid
Two top athletes were not part of the team in Lake Placid: Pius Paschke, who has recently been in poor form, did not travel to the USA, world champion Katharina Schmid is currently only number three among the German women and had to watch a mixed doubles for the first time since February 2021. This means that Schmid will also have to fear for her place at the World Championships on March 5th.
The DSV quartet had recently won the title five times in a row at the World Championships. The mixed doubles' Olympic debut in 2022, however, was disappointing, with only ninth place after Schmid's disqualification.
The women now have two World Cup weekends to look forward to in Ljubno (Slovenia) and Hinzenbach (Austria) before heading to the World Championships in Norway.
