The German men's indoor hockey team are world champions for the first time in 14 years. The team of the two national coaches Matthias Witthaus and Jan Philipp Rabente won the final in Porec, Croatia, against defending champions Austria in a shootout on Sunday with 3:1 after a 6:6 after regular time.
This secured the DHB selection as record world champions their fourth title. The last two world championship titles, however, were won by the Austrians, who were only defeated in a shootout in an exciting final. Goalkeeper Joshua Onyekwue Nnaji saved the decisive ball for the German team. This means that the two German national hockey teams are currently world champions on the field (2023) and in the hall.
The women's hockey team narrowly missed out on a medal and ended up fourth in the World Cup. The team, coached by Dominic Giskes and Markus Weise, failed in the semifinals and in the match for third place in the shootout against Austria and in the bronze medal match against the Czech Republic.
