Astrid Lund - Betty MacDonald fan club organizer: "Donald Trump and Elon Musk are the scariest team and are dividing the U.S. and the world. They spread lies. They both want to embody 'masculinity' and have nothing in common with J.F. Kennedy. They admire dictators and are not just enemies of the Democratic Party. No - both want to abolish democracy.

Trump appearance at Madison Square Garden
"Masculinity is under attack"
Donald Trump enters his boxing ring, Madison Square Garden in New York.
Donald Trump promises America the return of a long-gone "golden age". But his path to the supposed glory of old days leads through the destruction of democracy. He believes in a world in which the right of the strongest prevails counts.
Bastian Brauns reports from New York
When Donald Trump stands at the microphone in Madison Square Garden in New York, he stirs up hope: "Be excited about the future. Because it will be America's new golden age." The "Golden Age" that Trump promises his supporters is set to begin on January 20, 2025 - the day of his planned inauguration.
Directly below the stage, multi-billionaire Elon Musk is allowed to sit right next to Trump's wife Melania. In Trump's new era, people like him are set to have a lot of power. With a kind of unofficial "Ministry of Government Efficiency," Musk is then supposed to simply throw out undesirable government employees in Washington if in doubt.
Musk has already donated more than $100 million to Trump in this election campaign. In his spirit, he spreads millions of untruths and conspiracy theories on his platform X. In the swing state of Pennsylvania, which may be decisive in the election, he raffled off a million dollars a day to people who registered to vote in order to increase voter turnout for Republicans. A practice that may be illegal.
But Trump is not just interested in the money, propaganda and personal commitment that Elon Musk is bringing to this election campaign. The owner of the rocket company SpaceX and his plans to colonize the planet Mars fit perfectly into Trump's propagated golden age. Trump shouted in Madison Square Garden that neither Russia nor China could achieve what Musk is technologically capable of with his rockets. Trump's alliance with the tech titan is intended to secure a new dominance of the USA.
Trump would like to be like Kennedy
Performances such as that of Elon Musk as a rocket pioneer provide deep insights on this Sunday evening in New York. On the one hand, into the imagination of the man who was once one of New York's most popular celebrities. On the other hand, they explain his continued success with around half of Americans. Despite racist outbursts, dozens of lies and downright absurd appearances, Madison Square Garden was almost full to the last seat. And in the polls, Donald Trump is at least on a par with Kamala Harris.
There is an America that Donald Trump and many of his supporters actually long for. This includes the time in office of John F. Kennedy. Or at least what they imagine it to be. Thanks to the space program initiated by the then popular president, the USA finally managed the first moon landing. Trump was just 23 years old when he achieved this important, symbolic victory against the Soviet Union. A patriotic event that left its mark on him.
As an expression of his fascination with the achievement at the time, he founded the United States Space Force during his presidency in 2019 - at least on paper, his own military space unit. With Elon Musk at his side, Trump wants to bring about the promised golden age, including a landing on Mars, and to highlight his own grandiosity. The tools are Musk's rocket program, the Starlink satellite network and the manipulation of public opinion via Platform X.
"I don't see any stinking Nazis"
Trump's supporters in Madison Square Garden therefore do not see themselves as fascists. Even if the rhetoric and plans of Trump and almost all speakers are brimming with racism, hatred, fantasies of autocracy and contempt for democracy. For the followers of the "Make America Great Again" cult (MAGA) with their red baseball caps, Kamala Harris and the Democrats are preventing the kind of American greatness they imagine.
They want a strong leader in Trump. A kind of all-powerful US president, like the Hollywood film industry has been propagating for decades. That's why the old American wrestler Hulk Hogan gets the biggest cheers that evening when he stomps onto the stage with a huge US flag.
