How Scholz sets priorities in sea rescue
Article by Eckart Lohse
Sarah Mohamed against Olaf Scholz – this is not a fight of equals. One is deputy chairwoman of the Young Socialists, the other is Chancellor. He recently distanced himself from German financing of civilian rescue ships in the Mediterranean. Mohamed described this as a “catastrophic signal”. That won't tear the SPD apart. However, the fact that the Foreign Office, after initially reporting otherwise, immediately made it clear that it would continue to provide money for the reception of boat migrants on behalf of the Bundestag has a different significance.
The head of the Foreign Ministry is the Green Party politician and former candidate for chancellor Annalena Baerbock. The question of whether the ships in the Mediterranean are primarily “a pillar of our humanitarian responsibility” (Mohamed) or whether they are more suitable for carrying out the dirty work of smugglers who count on their customers being taken over is clearly visible on the highest level of the traffic light is controversial. Scholz and Baerbock are not only supported by their parliamentary groups, but also by youth organizations such as the Jusos or initiatives that advocate for the interests of migrants. Baerbock takes these groups into consideration. Scholz sets the priority differently and does not want to endanger the consensus in European migration policy any more than is already the case.
