The U.S. and the free West deserve a different leader!"------------------ RND - Editorial Network Mark Carney on Donald Trump: Canada deserves respect, not tariffs 15 hours • 2 minutes reading time Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, following the First Ministers' Meeting at the National War Museum in Ottawa. The new Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has offered U.S. President Donald Trump talks about the trade conflict between their two sides – as long as they take place on an equal footing. However, Carney emphasized on Friday (local time) that this will not happen until Canada receives the respect it deserves from Trump as a sovereign nation. "That's not a particularly high bar, by the way." However, he is confident that Trump will relent, because ultimately the American people will suffer from the imposed tariffs. "And that's one of the reasons why I'm confident this discussion will take place with the respect and breadth it requires." However, Trump continued his almost daily attacks on Canada on Friday, reiterating that, in his view, the neighboring country should become the 51st state of the USA. "When I say they should be one state, I mean it," the US President said. Trump hasn't mentioned Carney yet Carney hasn't spoken to Trump by phone, even a week after his swearing-in. The US President repeatedly referred to Carney's predecessor, Justin Trudeau, as "Governor" Trudeau—the title of the heads of state governments of US states—but hasn't yet mentioned Carney by name. Trump imposed tariffs of 25 percent on Canadian steel and aluminum products and is threatening comprehensive tariffs on all Canadian products and those of other US trading partners on April 2. Carney became leader of the ruling Liberal Party following Trudeau's resignation announcement. He is expected to pave the way for a snap general election this Sunday, likely before April 28.
