Protests against Musk in front of Tesla dealerships
Tesla CEO Elon Musk: Protests against him are growing in the US.
The anti-Elon Musk sentiment isn't stopping at Tesla dealerships either. There are protests in 28 states.
There are increasing protests in front of electric car manufacturer Tesla's stores in the US. They are directed against its CEO Elon Musk and his work for the Trump administration. On Saturday, 90 dealerships were targeted by demonstrators. They held signs with slogans such as "Get rid of your shares" and "Sell your Tesla."
The protest was initiated by Hollywood actor and filmmaker Alex Winter and Boston professor Joan Donovan. A website has now been set up announcing the demonstrations. Protests are already taking place in 28 states.
Musk is facing criticism primarily for the cuts to the Doge efficiency project he leads. US President Donald Trump had tasked Musk with finding ways to cut costs within US government agencies. But the resulting mass layoffs are turning more and more citizens against Musk. "There is no area of life that Doge doesn't touch," Donovan told CNN. "This is reflected in the diversity of people coming to these protests. 400 people demonstrated in front of a Tesla store in Rockville, Maryland, on Saturday, the same number as the week before.
Demonstrators carried signs and chanted slogans against Elon Musk and President Donald Trump in front of a Tesla dealership.
Elon Musk is apparently not unscathed by the criticism. On Thursday, he asked employees not to sell their shares. Since December, the automaker's shares have fallen by 48 percent. Musk owns about 13 percent.
More and more customers are also selling their Tesla vehicles. They now account for 1.4 percent of the used car market – a year ago, they were just 0.4 percent, as CNN reports.
Not all protests against Tesla and Musk are peaceful. Recently, Tesla vehicles have increasingly become the target of vandalism in the US. US President Trump has expressed his openness to prosecuting violence against Tesla as domestic terrorism. He now said at the White House that the perpetrators could face up to 20 years in prison, "and they will. (...) There will be no mitigating circumstances and there will be no pardons."
