They actually did it. Germany has a world champion team again! In faraway Indonesia, the German U17 beat France in the final of the World Cup.
Great video: Germany celebrates at the U17 World Cup
Before the big celebration could begin, the U17s had to tremble enormously at the World Cup. However, once the title was official, all the dams broke (find out more here). But shortly after winning the title there was also sad news for the young stars.
U17 World Cup: Germany wins on penalties
It was like deja vu. Both nations had already faced each other in the final in June of this year. Back then it was “only” about the title of European champion. But this decision also came on penalties.
That's how it was on Saturday in Indonesia. Germany had led through goals from Paris Brunner and Noah Darvich, but then gave up the lead. So the decision about the winner of the U17 World Cup had to be made right away.
The mission got off to a very bad start for Germany. Eric da Silva Moreira, the first shooter, missed. Because France first failed at the crossbar and then at Konstantin Heide, Paris Brunner was the fifth shooter and had a chance to win the title, but failed. A short time later there was cheering. Because Heide scored another try and Almugera Kabar crowned Germany the winner.
Emotional words from the coach
What a vintage Germany has. European and world champions within a very short time – that was very important for coach Christian Wück to highlight. At the moment of triumph, he also had to think of some sad news.
Because it was the last appearance together for the squad that celebrated so many successes. “I told the boys: They’ll make themselves immortal! I am so grateful to be able to supervise the class. It was our last game today,” said Wück.
