Embarrassing Trump faux pas: Harris pounces on "astonishingly senile moment"

Against Joe Biden, Donald Trump repeatedly alluded to his age. Now, however, he has made a serious faux pas himself.
Dortmund/Flint - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is often off the mark, not only when it comes to rhetorical know-how, but also when it comes to generally available information. Apart from his now countless lies and highly misleading statements, the 78-year-old has now embarrassed himself during an appearance in front of his supporters.
Embarrassing Trump faux pas: Republican confuses nature reserve with US Air Force base
Not many have managed to do that: Donald Trump confused a nature reserve with a US Air Force air base during an appearance at the town hall in the city of Flint (Michigan), one of the decisive swing states in the 2024 US election. He made the mistake when he reported on his plans for the US energy sector.
"We will soon be dominant in the energy sector," Donald Trump confidently announced to Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the governor of Arkansas, in the event of his election victory. "We have Bagram in Alaska. They say it could be as big, maybe even bigger, than all of Saudi Arabia," he added.
The problem: Bagram is a former US Air Force base in eastern Afghanistan near the capital Kabul. Like the rest of the country, it is now in the hands of the Taliban. Trump probably meant the "Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR)", in which he suspects there is more oil than in all of Saudi Arabia. The fundamental question of whether oil should be drilled for in the national wildlife refuge has been a political controversy since 1977.
US election 2024: Donald Trump has no interest in environmental protection
Trump's announcement is clear: after an election victory, he probably wants to have drilling for the coveted energy source carried out in the nature reserve in Alaska. However, implementing the plan is likely to be a mammoth task. According to the news platform "Alaska Beacon", a federal judge in Anchorage confirmed a previous ruling in February 2024: According to this, no oil and gas exploration work may take place in the ANWR.
The idea of breaking up the landscape to bring the precious oil to light is likely to cause gasps among environmentalists. For the Republican, however, protecting nature plays a subordinate role. In the TV debate with Kamala Harris, Donald Trump once again did not address the issue of environmental protection when he was explicitly asked about it.
Embarrassing Trump faux pas: Harris pounces on "astonishingly senile moment"
The faux pas did not go unnoticed by Trump's opponent and her campaign team. "In an astonishingly senile moment, Donald Trump tried to show how much he knows about the Air Force by claiming that Bagram Airfield is in Alaska. It is in Afghanistan," said the X-account "Kamala's Wins". However, the author of these lines apparently did not realize that Trump was not actually talking about the U.S. Air Force, but about his future energy policy.
The faux pas remains embarrassing nonetheless: especially because during the election campaign against Joe Biden, Trump regularly targeted the Democrat's age and, with it, the Democrat's alleged senility - in one case, however, much to the displeasure of his own wife Melania Trump.
It is not known whether his followers even noticed the mistake. While their favorite made the mistake, no reaction can be heard in the recording. It is to be assumed that very few of them had previously heard of the nature reserve in Alaska, let alone Bagram in Afghanistan.
