"I'm not joking": Trump underlines possible ambition for a third term

US President Donald Trump has again expressed ambitions for a third term, even though the Constitution currently only allows two. He himself sees things differently.
US President Donald Trump has underlined his possible ambition for a third term – even though the US Constitution currently only allows two terms. In a telephone interview with NBC News on Sunday, Trump responded to a question about this: "I'm not joking." There are "methods" by which a third term could be possible. "Many people" want him to seek a third term, the president said.
Trump had already publicly flirted with a third term in recent months. In January, he said he didn't know whether he was barred from running for president again. The New York Times also reported that Trump had already told members of Congress in November that he probably wouldn't run again - "unless you tell me, 'He's so good that we have to find a way.'"
During his presidential campaign in July, Trump even told a gathering of conservative Christians that they "wouldn't have to vote anymore" if he won the election.
Since the passage of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution in 1951, it has stipulated that "no person may be elected president more than twice." Republican Congressman Andy Ogles introduced an initiative in January to increase the term limit to three terms, but it is not considered to have a realistic chance of success. (AFP)
