Refugees: NRW municipalities have no more space - and write to the Prime Minister
Eight mayors from NRW wrote an alarm letter to Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) shortly before Christmas. Topic: The (failing) accommodation of refugees.
In it, the eight mayors, who come from the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis (including Bergisch-Gladbach, Leichlingen and others), describe the problems with accommodating refugees in their municipalities.
They say that the capacities are "no longer just at full capacity, but are extremely overloaded", and they also notice a "perceptible and worrying reduction in acceptance among the population".
The mayors also denounce the fact that attacks by people with a migration background on "employees of our authorities" are increasing and are becoming more frequent.
NRW mayors write an urgent letter to Wüst about asylum: people "crammed together in barracks"
Accommodation is becoming increasingly difficult. The mayors use drastic words in their alarm letter. In their municipalities, people have to be crammed together in "unacceptable barracks in dire need of renovation" because there is a massive lack of space.
The authors of the letter rule out the use of gyms, saying that this would be "just one step closer to refugee camps". In addition, accommodation in gyms is "financially and socially unfeasible".
The state government's reaction? The issue is being taken very seriously, reports "Bild". A response from Wüst "will be forthcoming soon".
