Wagenknecht compares current conditions with the end of the GDR

Wagenknecht compares current conditions with the end of the GDR Article by dpa • 22 hours • 2 minutes reading time Sahra Wagenknecht attacks the federal government in Dresden and receives much applause for her call for peace in Ukraine. Sahra Wagenknecht has accused the federal government of a "loss of touch with reality". A few days before the state elections in Saxony and Thuringia, she compared the current situation with the mood at the end of the GDR during an appearance in Dresden. Anyone who experienced the end of the GDR now has a déjà vu, she said to the applause of her supporters on Dresden's Schlossplatz. "You get the impression that those at the top are no longer able to handle it, they are no longer solving the problems. They no longer have a concept, a vision, a plan for the future." The Federal Republic is not the GDR, but there are parallels between 2024 and 1989, Wagenknecht said on the sidelines of the rally to the German Press Agency. "The political distance and cultural alienation between the government and the population are enormous. Incompetence, aggressive politics and a lack of connection to reality remind many East Germans of times they thought were long gone. Whether foreign policy, migration or energy policy: the government seems to live in a completely different world." Wagenknecht: Elections also a vote on the end of the traffic light coalition According to Wagenknecht, the current state elections are therefore more important than usual. "They are now also a vote on the end of the traffic light coalition, which should not lead our country into crisis for another year. If the traffic light parties do not enter the state parliaments, the Berlin government district cannot simply carry on as if nothing had happened." In her speech on Dresden's Schlossplatz, Wagenknecht blamed the established parties for the rise of the AfD, which includes right-wing extremists and Nazis. Wagenknecht sees BSW as a force for change The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) can bring about change. In the interests of well-integrated immigrants, uncontrolled migration must be stopped. This creates a mood in the country that is directed against the many honest migrants who are an important part of society. Wagenknecht received a lot of applause for her statements on the war in Ukraine. She condemned the Russian attack. "This war is a crime. We must do everything we can to end this war." But this cannot be achieved by supplying more and more weapons. A new state parliament will be elected in Saxony and Thuringia on Sunday. The former Left Party member of the Bundestag Sabine Zimmermann is running as the top candidate for the BSW in Saxony. In polls, the party is receiving ratings of up to 15 percent and could thus become part of a new government in Saxony.
