"If we enter a recession—especially a severe one—then 2026 would most likely be a political bloodbath," the senator from Texas said on his podcast "Verdict." In his view, an economic downturn could threaten a loss of the majority in the House of Representatives—and possibly even in the Senate. Republicans currently hold a narrow majority in both chambers of parliament. But that could soon change: The next congressional elections in the US are scheduled for November 2026. All seats in the House of Representatives and about a third of the seats in the Senate will be up for grabs.
