200 experts
An open letter casts a gloomy light on the president's mental state. According to him, things are not going well.
Remote diagnoses are a tricky thing. If you ask doctors, they strongly advise against it. Nevertheless, 200 psychologists in the USA have now placed a large-format ad in the "New York Times" in which they urgently warn against Donald Trump. The reason: The 78-year-old presidential candidate is dangerous and a "danger to democracy".
The health experts, doctors and other specialists claim to have diagnosed a mental disorder in Trump. The ex-president shows "symptoms of a serious and untreatable personality disorder". The disorder is the clinical picture of "malignant narcissism". This makes him "in every way unsuitable for another presidency."
The psychologists and therapists base their assessment on the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders," an internationally recognized psychiatric classification system. In an open letter, they come to the conclusion: "It is obvious that Trump meets the criteria for an antisocial personality disorder."
Renegade Republican: Conway fights against Trump
And it goes on to say: "Even a non-medical professional recognizes Trump's lifelong pattern of inability to submit to social norms and laws." The authors cite "compulsive lying, reckless behavior toward others, high irritability, impulsivity and irresponsibility, and a fundamental lack of remorse" as typical and obvious symptoms of Trump's pathological narcissism.
The open letter was initiated by George Conway, a former Republican and ex-husband of Trump's former press secretary Kellyanne Conway. George Conway is considered a renegade Republican who has long been unable to identify with the authoritarian orientation of the party under Trump and has therefore become one of the ex-president's harshest critics.
Does Trump have a tendency towards ultranationalism? "Definitely"
An investigation by "The Atlantic", in which former Trump confidants attested to the ex-president's fascist tendencies, caused a stir on Wednesday. According to his former chief of staff in the White House, Marine General John F. Kelly, Trump is the "most dangerous person" this country has ever seen.
Another employee of the Trump administration (2016-2020) has now confirmed Kelly's assessment. According to this, the deputy chief of staff of the Department of Homeland Security under Trump, Elizabeth Neumann, said that the Republican presidential candidate "definitely shows authoritarian tendencies". He does not comply with the law in any way, said Neumann in an interview with "Politico".
"Does he tend toward extreme nationalism? Absolutely. That's his trademark, isn't it? He has made nationalism the new definition of the Republican Party," Neumann said.
