"It's now about Kevin"
After the resignation of SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert, numerous political companions have spoken out. Many are concerned and wish him a speedy recovery.
Kevin Kühnert's resignation as General Secretary of the SPD has caused a great deal of sympathy among his political companions. Many wished him a speedy recovery after he justified the step with consideration for his health.
At short notice, SPD chairmen Lars Klingbeil and Sakia Esken appeared before the press. Klingbeil explained that he has a close personal friendship with Kühnert. He emphasized that the decision was not easy for Kühnert.
Succession to be decided quickly
It was the right decision: "It's now about Kevin." Everyone knows how exhausting the political business is. "Politics is not everything." Kühnert made a decisive contribution to ensuring that there was stability in the SPD.
Esken also received the decision with dismay. He was crucial for her path to the party leadership. Clarity had already been created as to how things would proceed. A proposal for Kühnert's successor will be made in the committees today. "We are prepared. After the discussion in the committees, the public will be informed as to how things will proceed.
"General secretaries are particularly challenged"
The first parliamentary manager of the SPD parliamentary group, Katja Mast, paid tribute to Kühnert for his decision: "General secretaries are particularly challenged. His rhetorical strength and strategic ability were an ideal basis for this task. I wish him all the best and good health," Mast told t-online. Mast worked "closely and trustingly" with Kühnert. "Big thanks for everything he has done for our SPD."

Green Party leader Ricarda Lang, who also recently resigned, wrote under Kühnert's announcement on Instagram: "Especially in this situation, you are showing that you care about the issue and not about yourself." He is one of the smartest and most quick-witted politicians she has had the pleasure of knowing. "You will be missed as a politician - and personally as a friend."
Green Party MP Katrin Göring-Eckardt reacted with dismay. "This is a hard blow. For the SPD, but also for German politics," wrote the Bundestag Vice President on X. Kühnert is one of the smartest of his generation. "I wish him all the strength for his recovery."
"It can be an ugly exploitation"
SPD Bundestag member Emily Vontz also expressed her regret on Instagram. "Thank you from the bottom of my heart, all the best and above all, get well soon," she wrote.
FDP politician Maries-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann also expressed her sympathy on X. The EU defense politician wrote: "The political system can be an ugly exploitation. No matter what divides you politically - when it comes to health, almost everything becomes secondary." She wished Kühnert a full recovery.
"Political differences take a back seat"
The Bavarian FDP leader Martin Hagen expressed his regret on Instagram. "I wish you a quick and full recovery, dear Kevin," he wrote. Health always comes first.
Justice Minister Marco Buschmann expressed similar views. "I wish him a speedy and full recovery," the FDP politician wrote on X.
"Political differences take a back seat when it comes to health," wrote CDU MP Matthias Hauer. He also wished Kühnert a speedy recovery from the bottom of his heart.
AfD co-chair Alice Weidel was more critical. After the resignation of the Green Party leadership, the SPD is now also showing "signs of disintegration," according to Weidel. "Why doesn't Scholz actually resign?" asked Weidel on the X platform.
