Donald Trump is "pissed off" because Russian President Vladimir Putin questioned Volodymyr Zelensky's credibility. The US president expressed this in an NBA interview. He also threatened to bomb Iran if a nuclear deal is not reached.
Wants to speak with Vladimir Putin personally next week: US President Donald Trump
In a departure from his previous rhetoric, US President Donald Trump expressed his extreme anger at Russian President Vladimir Putin. He was "very angry and pissed off" with Putin, Trump said in an interview with NBC news broadcast on Sunday. At the same time, Trump threatened Iran with "bombing" if talks on the country's nuclear program fail.
In the telephone conversation with NBC, which anchor Kristen Welker quoted on Sunday, Trump also threatened Russia with tariffs on trade in Russian oil. Trump said the tariffs would be applied if he and Moscow "cannot reach an agreement to end the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I believe Russia is to blame for this."
At the same time, Trump announced further talks with Putin in the coming days. Trump justified his unusually harsh words toward the Russian president with his recent comments about the credibility of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Putin has portrayed Zelensky as the illegitimate president of Ukraine for years. On Friday, he proposed placing Ukraine under UN administration.
Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine
Trump, for his part, has made no secret of his admiration for Putin in the past. After taking office in January, he already had a telephone conversation with the Russian president about the situation in Ukraine.
So far, US President Trump has blamed Zelensky for the lack of a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. At the end of February, a public confrontation erupted during Zelensky's visit to the White House.
Trump had already promised during his presidential campaign to quickly end the war in Ukraine. Since taking office, however, despite talks between US negotiators and Russia and Ukraine, he has not yet achieved a breakthrough.
US representatives held separate talks with Russia and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia last week about a possible ceasefire in Russia's war of aggression. An agreement was reached on a 30-day ceasefire on energy infrastructure and in the Black Sea. However, Moscow reiterated conditions for the implementation of the ceasefire.
Trump threatens Iran with bombing if nuclear agreement is not reached
In the conversation with NBC, Trump also reiterated his threats against Tehran. "If they don't make a deal, there will be bombing," Trump said. Trump also threatened Iran with additional tariffs. It initially remained unclear whether Trump's threats referred to a possible US attack alone or joint military action with its ally Israel.
In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly offered Iran a "deal" – and threatened military force if it failed. Western states have accused Iran for years of seeking to build nuclear weapons. Tehran denies this. However, the country has increased its production of enriched uranium in recent years.
In 2015, Tehran signed an agreement that provided for the easing of sanctions in return for curbing Iran's nuclear program. During Trump's first presidency, the US unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018. Efforts to revive the nuclear deal have failed since then.
