Lys Assia dead – First Eurovision Song Contest winner dies in Switzerland aged 94
Assia, who celebrated her birthday earlier this month, passed away in Zurich's Zollikerberg Hospital
EUROVISION'S first winner Lys Assia has died aged 94.
The organisers said they will be paying tribute to her "life and her lasting commitment" to Eurovision.
Assia started her career as a dancer but soon turned to singing in 1940.
After she got her big break in 1954 with hit song Oh, Mein PaPa, she went on to win the Eurovision Song Contest when it first started in 1956, winning with the song Refrain.
Since Assia was the contest's first winner, she is often referred to as Eurovision's First Lady.
Assia went on to represent Switzerland on two more shows. In 1957 she finished eighth, but in 1958 she came a close second.
The Eurovision star was a frequent guest at special events honouring the contest, including the 60th anniversary show in London in 2015.
She was a guest of honour at the contest in 1985 while in 2005 she performed to Congratulations to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
