Does Vladimir Putin want to outwit the future US President Donald Trump?
What is currently important in the Ukraine war: Vladimir Putin has been openly waging war against Ukraine since February 2022 and is currently occupying around a fifth of his neighboring country. A possible end to the war is currently not in sight. Ukraine is worried about Donald Trump's election victory in the USA. During the election campaign, the 78-year-old threatened to drastically cut financial and military support for Kyiv or to stop it altogether. Or is the situation not so drastic after all? The Ukrainian ambassador Andrij Melnyk, who worked in Germany from 2015 to 2022 and is now active in Brazil, paints his own picture of the situation.
Ukraine war currently: Zelensky and Trump allegedly discover "understanding for each other"
In a conversation with "Focus Online", Melnyk now explained that "the relationship between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is better than expected." According to this, the designated US president and his Ukrainian counterpart are said to have even "discovered understanding for each other". It would be a completely new tone - especially with regard to Trump. He had accused Zelensky of robbing the USA of several billion dollars every time he visited.

With this new understanding, Ukraine is concerned with "preserving its independence and culture". For the USA, on the other hand, it is important to act as a major power again "in a positive sense". Melnyk predicts a tougher US stance against Russia even before Trump takes office next January. And what about Vladimir Putin in this calculation? According to Melnyk, the Kremlin chief would try to "outsmart Trump."
