Merz and Mützenich meet the Federal President this evening
The opposition leader, the SPD parliamentary group leader and the Federal President apparently want to discuss the date for the new Bundestag elections.
According to information from t-online, CDU leader Friedrich Merz and SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich will meet with Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier this evening at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will most likely focus on the date for the new elections. It had previously become known that the leaders of the CDU/CSU and SPD parliamentary groups had agreed on a proposal for an early Bundestag election: February 23rd.
The date is also said to have been agreed with the Greens. According to information from t-online, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is expected to ask the vote of confidence in the Bundestag on December 16th. The final decision on the election date must be made by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Scholz originally wanted to ask the vote of confidence on January 15th in order to bring about a new election at the end of March. However, after public pressure, he showed himself willing to compromise.
