Article by Birgitta Stauber • 16 hours • 4 minutes reading time "It's a Man's World": Donald Trump leaves no doubt about that when he is cheered at the Republican Party Convention in mid-July. Still wearing a bandage on his ear from the attack he survived during a campaign appearance in Philadelphia, he strode into the arena to the sound of James Brown's song. Three months later, on the night of November 5th to 6th, Donald Trump declared himself the 47th President of the United States in Florida. This means that a criminal who was convicted of sexual abuse and hush money payments to a prostitute is moving into the White House. A politician who put his masculinity and his sexism at the center of his election campaign. In fact, Trump had every reason to expect that his powerful, below-the-belt rhetoric would go down well with most male Americans. After all, in 2016 and 2020, most men voted for Trump, while women voted predominantly Democratic. In the run-up to the election on November 5th, many experts had suspected that the gender gap would widen in this male-archaic election campaign. The hope behind this was that Republican women would be put off by Trump and switch to the Democrats. But that didn't happen, on the contrary: Trump was not only able to increase his lead among men, but also scored more points than before among women. How come almost every second woman voted for Trump? Why do they put up with Trump calling his female competitor stupid, lazy and weak? Why do men from the classic Democratic clientele shy away from Kamala Harris? Is America perhaps not yet ready for a woman as president?
