Sarah Wagenknecht warns of "left-wing liberalism"
Berlin | The left-wing politician Sahra Wagenknecht has warned of a narrowing of public discourse and a resulting division in society. "You have to stop moralizing debates or deliberately aiming to cut people down," she told the "Welt" (Monday edition). From the conservative to the left, everyone "who has an interest in our country not ending like the USA with this extreme division" should learn again to discuss with "decency and respect".
She also harshly criticized the left-wing camp. "What is called left-wing liberalism today should actually be called 'left-wing illiberalism' because of its pronounced intolerance," said Wagenknecht. "This left-illiberalism arose from the new academic middle class in the big cities, a relatively privileged milieu that today lives largely isolated, a filter bubble in real life."
The obvious must be clear: "Anyone who does not share certain opinions is therefore still a long way from being a Nazi who has to be 'canceled'," she said. This also applies to those who demonstrated against the Corona measures. There are millions of people who feel abandoned by the government.
It is legitimate to protest. "Many of the participants in the large demonstrations were not conspiracy ideologues or right-wing extremists, but normal citizens whose concerns politicians should take seriously," said Wagenknecht. In view of the federal election campaign, the former parliamentary group leader recommended to her own party not to focus on the Green clientele.
"The focus of our politics must be social issues, not language contortions and lifestyle issues. And leftists must shed the self-righteous attitude that drove away many voters," said Wagenknecht.
